2026–27 FAFSA Application Opens for Tennessee Students
The Tennessee Higher Education Commission (THEC) announced Wednesday that the 2026–27 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is officially open, giving students and families across the state an earlier start than ever to apply for college financial aid.
Students can complete the form online here.
The U.S. Department of Education confirmed last week that this year’s FAFSA form marks the earliest launch in the program’s history. This follows the late launch for the 2024/25 FAFSA application process that received criticism.
“Finishing your FAFSA is a crucial step for Tennessee students and families in making college possible,” said Dr. Steven Gentile, THEC executive director. “We encourage every student and family to take this first step, get started as soon as possible, and access the financial aid available to them.”
Dr. Gentile is encouraging every student and family to access the financial aid available to them.
FAFSA as a Gateway to Aid
Completing the FAFSA unlocks access to a wide range of federal and state aid programs, including the Pell Grant, the Tennessee Promise scholarship, and the HOPE Scholarship. THEC advises families to gather tax returns, W-2s, and other financial documents before beginning the form to avoid delays.
FAFSA Frenzy: Statewide Support
To boost completion rates, THEC leads TN FAFSA Frenzy, a statewide Path to College campaign that runs through April 1, 2026. The initiative offers free video guides, step-by-step instructions, and other resources on their site.
From now through spring, schools and community organizations across Tennessee will host FAFSA Frenzy events where students and families can get hands-on help filling out the application.
Tennessee’s FAFSA Leadership
Tennessee has earned national recognition for FAFSA completion. In 2024–25, the state ranked No. 1 in the nation, with a record 75.7 percent completion rate among Tennessee Promise applicants, according to the National College Attainment Network.
Each year, THEC highlights high schools with exceptional FAFSA completion rates or significant improvement through the TN FAFSA Challenge. A full list of 2024–25 FAFSA Champion schools is available online at CollegeforTN.org.
Why It Matters
With Tennessee’s commitment to expanding college access, state leaders stress that completing the FAFSA is the first step in making higher education affordable.
“By helping families complete the FAFSA early, we maximize the opportunity for students to secure both federal and state aid,” Gentile said. “It’s a step that directly impacts whether students can pursue college and graduate without the burden of excessive debt.”
