Manchester City Schools elementary teacher Holly Logan reacted in visible surprise Wednesday morning when she heard her name announced as a recipient of the prestigious Milken Educator Award.
National Institute for Excellence in Teaching Chief Executive Officer Dr. Joshua Barnett made the announcement in front of a packed crowd of students and educators at Logan’s Westwood Elementary School.
Logan is an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher at the school and serves the district by training, supporting, and mentoring fellow educators and providing translation services.
“Holly Logan is a remarkable educator. She breaks down communication and cultural barriers for her students and those in her community,” said Westwood Principal Rebecca Welch. “She empowers students to access academic and social success through instruction, positive encouragement, and programming that scaffolds their needs every year that they are with us. Students' lives are forever changed due to relationships initiated and nurtured by Holly, who has a tremendous heart of compassion.”
Oscars of Teaching
Established in 1987, the Milken Educator Award is one of the highest honors in education and is frequently referred to as the “Oscars of Teaching.” The teachers and principals who receive the award take home $25,000 and are recognized for both their achievements and the promise of future accomplishments.
"Congratulations to Holly Logan on receiving the Milken Educator Award and representing the state of Tennessee on a national level," said Tennessee Department of Education Commissioner Lizzette Reynolds. "This prestigious award is a testament to the impactful service and leadership she demonstrates to her students, community, and the educator profession.”
A news release sent to the Tennessee Firefly described Logan as a leader in her community who is “deeply committed to being present for her students” and demonstrates what it means to be an ESL teacher.
Since Tennessee joined the Milken Educator Award program in 1992, 73 Tennessee educators have received the award.
