Memphis-Shelby County Schools Face Possible Loss of $17 Million in Federal Funding
Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) says district staff are monitoring pending federal decisions that could affect approximately $17 million in funding for district programs.
The funding supports services including professional development for teachers, instructional support, extended learning opportunities, and programs for immigrant students. District officials say that if the funding is not restored, up to 100 positions could be impacted, with about 75 percent of those roles currently filled.
“While this situation presents challenges, our priority remains to ensure minimal disruption to students, families, and staff,” said the district in a news release sent to the Tennessee Firefly. “MSCS is developing contingency plans that may involve program adjustments, or the use of reserve funds designated to maintain long-term financial stability.”
Education advocates have expressed concern that cuts in federal funding could affect staffing, programs, and outcomes for students.
MSCS said the district is committed to keeping the public informed as more information becomes available.
