Wilson County Schools Votes to Raise Employee Health Insurance Costs Amid Funding Concerns

Wilson County School Board members approved a new health insurance plan for 2026 that will increase employee contributions by at least $600 annually. The policy was met with both opposition and support from attendees at Thursday evening’s Board of Education meeting in Lebanon.

The decision followed presentation from Arthur J. Gallagher & Co., the insurance company contracted to provide medical plan options for the district. Board members considered keeping the current plan at the same cost or choosing from six alternative options presented by the firm. Any changes will take effect January 1, 2026, with all employees enrolling during open enrollment in Fall 2025.

Director of Schools Jeff Luttrell emphasized the district’s need to strengthen its insurance fund, citing millions spent from the fund balance on roof and HVAC repairs, playground upgrades, and other maintenance.

“We’ve got roof problems. You know it, I know it. So, I have to look at the big picture,” Luttrell said. “I cannot sit back and not tell you where you’re headed if you do not address this insurance fund.”

Luttrell also defended the value of the plan, highlighting that it offers a $0 premium with 90 percent coverage after the deductible, calling it “an unbelievable insurance plan.” He added that a review of audited numbers from the past five years and the current fiscal year showed the district could face serious trouble if the contribution increase is not implemented.

Board member Kimberly McGee acknowledged the difficulty of the decision but supported the vote, citing concerns over the district’s preparedness for emergencies.

“If an emergency arises, and we don’t have the funds to take care of it, what are we going to do?” she said. “It’s not a good decision. It’s a hard decision. But decisions must be made.”

With the vote finalized, Wilson County employees will see the new contribution rates reflected in their paychecks starting January 2026.
