“Governor Bill Haslam’s appointment to the University of Tennessee Board is a significant win for higher education in our state. Few leaders understand the importance of education and workforce development the way he does. From launching Tennessee Promise and Drive to 55 during his time as governor to working closely with both K–12 and higher education systems, Governor Haslam has always been committed to opening doors of opportunity for Tennesseans,” said Sexton in a statement. “His appointment comes at a time of strong growth and innovation across the UT System,” Speaker Sexton added. “His deep understanding of state government, his passion for education, and his results-driven approach will complement the outstanding work President Boyd and the board have already accomplished. Together, I believe they will continue to elevate the UT System as a national leader in higher education.”

The University of Tennessee Board of Trustees is responsible for the governance and strategic oversight of the University of Tennessee System, including campuses in Knoxville, Chattanooga, Martin, Pulaski (UT Southern), and the UT Health Science Center in Memphis.

Haslam’s appointment reunites him with UT System President Randy Boyd. During the former governor’s administration, Boyd served as Commissioner of Economic and Community Development.

Following an unsuccessful run for governor himself, Boyd took over leadership of the UT System, where he has spearheaded efforts to launch UT Southern, investments in cutting-edge research facilities, and a renewed focus on student success and career readiness.

“Governor Haslam has been a mentor and an inspiration to me throughout my career in public service. His leadership, vision, and deep commitment to education make him an extraordinary addition to the UT Board of Trustees. It’s an honor to have him join the board—and I’m excited to officially call him boss again,” said Boyd.
