Tennessee High School Class of 2026 Now Eligible to Apply for TN Promise
Tennessee’s Class of 2026 high school seniors can now take their first steps toward tuition-free college through the Tennessee Promise (TN Promise) program, the Tennessee Higher Education Commission (THEC) announced Friday. Applications are open online and must be submitted by Monday, Nov. 3, 2025.
Launched in 2014 as the nation’s first statewide college promise program, THEC says the Tennessee Promise has been a decade-long success story, enabling more than 250,000 students to pursue postsecondary education without the burden of tuition costs. Since its inception, THEC says the program has invested over $200 million to increase college access and build a more skilled and competitive workforce in Tennessee.
TN Promise offers eligible high school graduates the opportunity to attend any of the state’s 13 community colleges, 23 Tennessee Colleges of Applied Technology (TCATs), or participating institutions offering associate degree programs, completely tuition-free. This tuition coverage applies after accounting for other financial aid and covers mandatory fees, helping to ease the financial barriers that often prevent students from pursuing higher education.
Direct Admission Program Gateway
This year, the TN Promise application also doubles as the gateway to Tennessee’s new Direct Admissions Pilot Program, which will automatically admit qualifying high school seniors into participating public and private colleges across the state. By using existing academic data, the pilot program aims to simplify and streamline the college enrollment process, offering a proactive pathway to higher education.
“Tennessee Promise has helped more than 250,000 Tennessee students access college over the past ten years,” said Dr. Steven Gentile, Executive Director of THEC. “We are excited that the Class of 2026 will have the opportunity not only to benefit from this program but also to break last year’s record application numbers. Together with our partners, we remain committed to helping students take the crucial first step toward earning a college credential.”
The program is administered in partnership with tnAchieves and The Ayers Foundation Trust, organizations that provide essential mentorship and guidance to students as they transition from high school to college. Beyond financial assistance, this support ensures students meet program requirements, such as mandatory meetings and community service hours.
Last year’s TN Promise application cycle saw the largest applicant pool in program history, with over 66,000 seniors applying. THEC anticipates surpassing this milestone in 2025 through continued collaboration with communities, schools, and educational partners statewide.
Tennessee’s sustained investment in TN Promise, including a nearly $1 billion commitment by Governor Bill Lee and the Tennessee Board of Regents to expand TCAT campuses and workforce-aligned programs, underscores the state’s dedication to affordable education and economic growth. As the program enters its second decade, Tennessee Promise continues to open doors and create pathways to opportunity for thousands of young Tennesseans each year.
